Leading During Times of Extreme Crisis: R. Kalonymous Kalman Shapiro in the Warsaw Ghetto
Not every problem can be solved. However, when leaders face an insurmountable crisis, the way they handle it can still impact their followers in a powerful way. During the Holocaust, there were many heroes who played leadership roles in different ways, even though there was little they could do to protect their followers. While we cannot possibly compare ordinary crises or tragedies to what these leaders faced during the Holocaust, we can still learn important lessons about leadership from their actions. In this session, we will discuss the leadership of R. Kalonymous Kalman Shapira in the Warsaw Ghetto from 1939-1942 and use his teachings to provide insight into an approach to dealing with crises that have no apparent solution.
